Personal musings on Wintering

It was on a wintry February evening in 2021, when l found myself tuning into the radio adaptation of Wintering.
Cocooned in my dimly lit bedroom, with the opening scene striking a chord, l continued to listen to the soothing words transmitting across the airwaves.
During these retreating days, l awaited news of my beloved husband as he underwent surgery. Thankfully we made it through the days of living in the shadows - steadily making our way into the light.
Moving onto the present moment, as l ride the stormy waves of grief, Wintering, once again resonates, and touches my heart.
It also reminds me how the touchstones, l've cultivated over time, such as meditating, reading, and being in nature, are all anchors, helping me to let go, accept, and embrace the ebb and flow of life.
Reading the 'Cold Water' chapter, leaves me feeling tempted to give winter swimming a whirl. Living by a lake, as well as having a dear friend, who enjoys going for a January dip, certainly makes it feasible - all l can say is, watch this space...
In the meantime, l'm finding wisdom in my personal winters - a deepening sense of compassion towards myself and to others.
I'm also left feeling moved by the book's opening line: 'Some winters happen in the sun'. l couldn't agree more.
